Enjoying a good cigar is always part ritual - and the ritual of lighting up is one that should be embellished and savored. Cigar Watch want to help you enjoy that stogie and help you learn how to smoke a cigar in a way that will increase your enjoyment of the experience. Here are a few hints to get you started:

  • Use the Right Light: There are all sorts of fires that will turn your smoking experience into pure torture. Most of them introduce chemicals into the process - noxious chemicals that will cause you to put out a good cigar way before you get to the nub. Two fires won’t do that. The first is the old stand-by - wooden matches and the second is a butane lighter.
  • Kiss The Tip: The hottest part of any flame is just above the visible flame. The coolest part is at its base. So when you light your cigar ‘kiss’ the hottest part of the flame with the tip of your stogie and gently rotate it. Don’t singe the wrapper. A black ring around the end of your cigar is the sign of a careless amateur.
  • Gently Draw: Remember that the strength of your draw determines the heat of the fire that will develop inside the cigar. If you are puffing away like a steam engine, things are going to get pretty hot at the far end - that will bring out some of the nastier demons lurking in your stogie - so draw gently.
  • Check the Tip: Once you have lit your smoke, turn it around and blow gently on the tip. Check to make sure that the entire face is glowing. If you find parts that aren’t, re-apply the fire and try to be more diligent next time.
  • Sips Not Gulps: A good cigar should be sipped not gulped. Keep your draws slow and even. Take the smoke in your mouth and roll it around - savor the taste. Then gently let it out through your nose. Savor the taste - look for the complexities in it - and marvel at the maker’s art.
  • Gently Puff Out: Let you smoke rest for at least 30 seconds between draws. Your patience will be rewarded with improved taste. Then gently puff out before your draw in. This will clear the cigar - push out any nasty things that have built up.
  • Now Settle In: Now you’ve got it well lit. Settle back and enjoy the experience,
